The property on which Casa Azevedo is built has been in our family for 32 years, and our parents José Martins and Maria Gomes Azevedo constructed the house in 1986 as a retirement residence. Now this treasured home stands as a testament to their love of gathering as a family. The traditional feel and layout of the home was built with entertaining in mind, and captures the true essence of the Azores. Our family dates back 4 generations on Terceira, and the island culture is a part of us no matter where in the world we are.

Terceira Island, Azores

Terceira island is an inactive volcanic island that is composed of several older extinct volcanoes. The highest point of Terceira is 1021 m, formed by the summit of the dormant Santa Barbara volcano, known as the Serra de Santa Bárbara. It’s highly recommended you take a visit to the summit if the skies are clear, you’ll have gorgeous views of the entire island, and on clear days you can even see the Pico Island the forth out of nine Azorean Islands.

Terceira is fit for explorers with hiking, biking, sailing and deep sea fishing for your adventurous side while more leisurely activities include whale watching, antique shopping, the Biscoitos wine museum and Cinqo Ribeiras artisanal cheese factory.

The Azores

The Azores, officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores, is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal (along with Madeira). Under the direction of Prince Henry the Navigator, a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire, the Azores were discovered and populated in the early 1400s, although archeological findings possibly indicate a human presence on the island prior to the Portuguese.

Casa Azevedo is on the island of Terceira, the third biggest of the nine volcanic islands on the archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,400 km (870 mi) west of Lisbon in continental Portugal, about 1,500 km (930 mi) northwest of Morocco, and about 1,930 km (1,200 mi) southeast of Newfoundland, Canada. It was also the third island discovered, which makes sense, as Terceira means “third” in Portuguese!

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the moderate climate of the Azores, which is heavily influenced by its distance from the continents and by the passing Gulf Stream with it’s warm waters. Due to the marine influence, and depending on the season, temperatures remain mild year-round with daytime temperatures fluctuating between 16 °C (61 °F) and 25 °C (77 °F) and up to 80% humidity during the summer months.
